Things to Consider During Trauma Radiography
These are the things to consider when performing trauma radiography. These must be observe at all times so as to to perform the examinations correctly and efficiently.
- Speed – trauma radiographers must produce quality images in the shortest amount of time. Rapidity in performing diagnostic procedures is critical to saving the patients life.
- Accuracy – trauma radiographers must provide accurate images with a minimal amount of distortion and maximum amount of recorded detail
- Quality – quality does not have to sacrificed in the production of images
- Positioning – careful precautions must be taken to ensure that performance of imaging procedures does not exacerbate the patients injuries
- Practice Standard precautions – exposure to blood and body fluid should be expected in trauma radiography. Wear gloves, gowns and mask whenever appropriate. Place IR and sponges in nonporous plastic to protect from body fluids
- Immobilization – never remove any immobilization device without physicians orders, Provide proper immobilization and support to increase patient comfort and minimize risk of motion
- Anticipation – anticipating required special projections or diagnostic procedures for certain injuries makes the radiographer a vital part of the ER team.
- Attention to detail – never leave a trauma patient unattended during radiographic procedures
- Attention to departmental protocol and scope of practice – know department protocols and practice only within your competence and abilities.
- Professionalism – ethical conduct in all situation and with every person
