Praning5254 Small Intestinal Series (SIS)

- a radiographic contrast study of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum
Indications
- occult bleeding
- recurrent obstructive symptoms
- malabsorption
- determine the extent of Crohn’s disease

Adults
Patient Preparations
- Fasting ( 6-8 hrs NPO, no breakfast)
- Laxatives (4 tablets dulcolax at bedtime, 1 suppository at early in the morning)
Materials
- CM – BaSO4 500 – 1000 cc (thin)
- Intubation tube
- Syringe and container
Procedure
- Scout film of the abdomen (AP)
- CR level of the iliac crest
- PX intubated with tip into the duodenum
- Introdcution of CM up to the ileo-cecal region – uder fluoroscopic study, do spot film

Exposures
- abdomen AP

For Newborn to 2 y.o. and below, no solid food on the day of the examination
- NPO 3 hours before the exam
For 3 – 6 y.o., pediatric suppository or enema
For 7-16 y.o., NPO past midnight and take suppository laxatives 2-3 hrs before the exam
