Praning5254 Myelography

- a radiographic contrast study of the spinal canal and the spinal cord


Patient Preparations

- Optional - Fasting ( 6-8 hrs NPO, no breakfast)

Materials

- CM – Iodinated compound; 15 – 20ml (Iopamidol or Iopamiro)
- Syringe and container
- Spinal needle
- Anesthesia
- Dressing tray

Method

  1. scout film, to include vertebrae
  2. patient in lateral position (lateral decubitus)
  3. place marker between L3 and L4
  4. insertion of spinal needle
  5. introduction of CM
  6. remove spinal needle
  7. lie patient in prone position
  8. do fluoroscopic study from lumbar level
  9. tilt table so that the patient is in trendelenberg position
  10. trace the flow of dye cephalad
  11. take exposures of vertebral level as needed (spot/overhead)
