- a radiographic contrast study of the spinal canal and the spinal cord
Patient Preparations
- Optional - Fasting ( 6-8 hrs NPO, no breakfast)
Materials
- CM – Iodinated compound; 15 – 20ml (Iopamidol or Iopamiro)
- Syringe and container
- Spinal needle
- Anesthesia
- Dressing tray
Method
- scout film, to include vertebrae
- patient in lateral position (lateral decubitus)
- place marker between L3 and L4
- insertion of spinal needle
- introduction of CM
- remove spinal needle
- lie patient in prone position
- do fluoroscopic study from lumbar level
- tilt table so that the patient is in trendelenberg position
- trace the flow of dye cephalad
- take exposures of vertebral level as needed (spot/overhead)
